Stormy Weather

Greetings to all!  It's me, Maggie!  As some of you may know, Springtime in Kansas means keep your eye on the weather (especially if you're a weather geek like our mom), and yesterday, we were in the watch area for a big storm.

Shortly after dinner, this one rolled in:

Off our deck, facing west

It dropped a tornado near Salina, KS, but fortunately for us, it skirted around just to our west.

The next cell that popped up spawned another tornado - this time just to our west (at Milford Lake) and was tracking our way. Our tornado sirens started going off, and Mom and Dad were following the storm closely on radar and on the radio. When it got closer, we headed downstairs to our "safe room". Here's a look at us down there:

"BOOM!"
"BOOM!"

It seemed like the right way to ride out the storm.

Have I mentioned that our "safe room" is also our Library? It's dug into the side of our hill, under our garage - so it has a concrete ceiling. There's a door that closes us off from the rest of the house and a window, but it's made of glass blocks and is as strong as cinderblocks. Pretty awesome. Might as well be comfortable while we wait for the "all clear", right?

After the tornadic part of the storm had passed and we were in the "severe thunderstorm" part, we went back upstairs. We had played enough Crazed River Otter Games for the day, so Cam and I moved on to something else.

"I think Mom's got us, Cam!"
"No ... we still have a chance.  I need to think."

It was us against Mom.  She won this time, but we'll get her on the next go-round!

What do you all do when there are big storms outside?

Yours sincerely,
Margaret Thatcher

  1. Our Mom lived in Missouri for a time when she was a puppy, and remembers those tornado sirens (and remembers a time when HER granny was staying in Missouri to take care of Mom, and the sirens went off, and her granny, who was from Pawsylvania and was not used to tornadoes was trying to remember what corner of the basement they should be hiding in... we think your set up sounds MUCH better)! You two are clearly braver than we are - while we like thunderstorms and can even tolerate fireworks, I'm not so sure about that whole Auntie Em thing and we definitely wouldn't fit into baskets on bicycles! Stay safe and practice your backgammon!

  2. If you have to have a storm cellar it might as well be comfortable. Looks like your family has a great one.

  3. Ohhhhhhhhhhhh no that must just be plain scary. I'm glad you have a safe place with a sturdy ceiling and lots of reading material.
This time of year really makes mom crazy. She is kinda afraid of tstorms and lightning due to a very bad/sad experience when she was a child.
So of course I can sense her mood when there is one on the way. Most often if it is really a lot of lightning and thunder she will put (shove) me in my PTU and we sit on the floor til it passes.
    Hugs madi your bfff

  7. That looks like such a better place to ride out the storm than we have! We don't do basements in Texas -- the ground isn't stable enough for them. So whenever our tornado sirens go off, we have to all go to Momma's closet!

  8. Living in an area that shakes a bunch, Mama has emergency plans backed up by emergency plans...We are lucky we don't have a bunch of storms up here but when we lived in Texas we would all pile in the itty bitty bathroom downstairs!

So glad you all came through the storms ok!!

  9. Wow - that's a pretty scary cloud rolling in. We had some noise and lights around midnight but nothing too bad. Tomorrow is sounding like a very bad day for Tornado Alley. Stay safe. Our human brother had a safe room built into his garage in the new house in Texas, maybe we need one of those too.

  10. I hide under the bed or under the couch. We are lucky as we don't get tornadoes here.

  11. That is good you have a safe room. Is there lots of kibble and treats there?

  12. The storm pictures gives our mommy a belly ache. She's so afraid of tornadoes that she got herself a safe house in Oregon! Our Grandpa from Kansas is in Arizona but will be in Salina by Friday for a convention so let's hope for no tornadoes around there this weekend. Mommy can't handle it. We're really glad you have a safe place to go though.

  13. That sounds like a good safe room. We hope you never have to see just how safe it really is though.

  14. I'm so glad you have a safe room! I hope tornadoes stay away. We don't have them regularly in Virginia, but in February, a EF3 hit the neighboring county. We had a warning where I was at work (in our county) and we went to the basement of the office building.

  17. We are glad the tornadoes didn't get to your house! It looks like you have a great safe room, but we would want a bed in there to hide under, too!
