Memorial Day 2010 - "Flags In"

Memorial Day. A day to honor our fallen service members. This is Memorial Day we give you a glimpse into a long-standing tradition observed at Arlington National Cemetery:

Spc. Athiambo Onyango of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), places an American flag in front of a grave stone at Arlington National Cemetery for Memorial Day weekend.

This tradition, known as "flags in," has been conducted annually since 1948. Every available soldier in the 3rd U.S. Infantry participates, placing small American flags one foot in front and centered before each grave marker.

The 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) began their rounds to place a small American flag into the ground in front of every grave marker at Arlington National Cemetery for the upcoming Memorial Day observance. Please remember to take time to honor our fallen service members. We thank God for these men and women this day and every day!

  1. Thank woo for this glimpse into this tradition - the image of Arlington covered in flags is one we are all familiar with. We woo our thanks to all who have served, and especially to those who paid the ultimate sacrafice, and their families.

  3. Thank you for sharing the information about your traditions.

Our thoughts today are with all those who lost their lives in pursuit of freedom.

Thank you for being our friends, and may our friendship last forever and a day.

And may The Flag of Friendship bind our two countries together for always too.

Thinking of you all on this very special and honorable day.

    Your friends across The Pond,

    Jeannie and Marvin xx

  4. Thanks for the pictures at Arlington. (It hit me that I have not been back to Ft Sam to see the back of the stone to see mom's name...)

  6. ps Arlington being the DC Nat'l cemetary must have units that take care of all details. When we thanked volunteers yesterday, we were speaking of Ft Sam and the others we know of outside of DC.
We should have known Arlington was different and looked it up! oops on our part.
Raised our flag to full staff 37 min ago.
    God bless all resting.

  14. Thank you for sharing this post. In Hawaii, a fresh flower lei is placed on the graves of veterans. We almost didn't have the 50,000 needed, but in the end the people and businesses came through and we had enough.
